The Caregiver and Secondhand Trauma (CAST) Collaboration defines Parent/Caregiver and Secondhand Trauma in the world of neurodiversity as suffering anguish from a deeply distressing experience that includes the realities of loving and caring for a child or loved one who struggles with their mental or physical health in any way.
Caregiver Trauma is a very complex subject. If you are currently in a Caregiver role and are struggling, click here to see if you are suffering from Caregiver Trauma/Burnout.

Secondary traumatic stress is the emotional and/or physical stress that results when an individual hears about the firsthand trauma of another individual. This can be any individual…a parent hearing of a child’s trauma, a spouse hearing of their partner’s trauma, a worker hearing of a co-worker’s trauma, etc.
Secondary trauma can have the same serious impact as firsthand trauma on a person.
